I am pleased to offer for sale this beautiful oil on canvas by the very sought after and talented French artist Roger de la Corbiere, which was painted in 1959 as per receipts included Frost & Reed stating £68.50 which was an expensive painting 60 yes ago.

The artist has signed the painting in the lower right hand bottom corner ‘ R.de la Corbiere ‘.

There is an inscription in ink on the stretcher which confirms the location as :

Bréhat (French: Île-de-Bréhat, Breton: Enez Vriad) is an island and commune located near Paimpol, a mile off the northern coast of Brittany. Administratively, it is a commune in the Côtes-d'Armor department in northwestern France.

Bréhat is actually an archipelago composed of two main islands, separated only at high tide, and many smaller ones. It is famous for its pink granite rocks, very mild micro-climate and Mediterranean vegetation, due to the warm Gulf Stream coming from across the Atlantic.

Many day-trippers come to Brehat every day by the ferry service (les Vedettes de Bréhat) and visit the main tourist attractions, the Paon & Rosedo lighthouses, the St-Michel chapel, the Guerzido beach, the Birlot water-mill and the Verrerie of Bréhat.

A stunning late evening view off of the Brittany coastline depicting the sun low in the sky before sunset with a gentle shallow ripples of water breaking on shore against rocky outcrops.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Henry Roger Mascarel de la Corbiere was born in Vouneuil-sur-Vienne, France, on July 22, 1893, and died in Paris at the age of 81 on September 3, 1974.
He studied under the Russian painter Choltse, who was a great exponent of light and shade particularly in snow scenes.

On August 2, 1922 he married Martha Germaine Page (1891-1975) in Paris. He had two daughters.

Corbiere was Influenced by Paul Signac (1863-1935), who helped him to start his painting career in La Rochelle.
-
He was a friend of Maurice Denis (1870-1943) and of other “Sacred Art” painters in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Jean Souverbie (1891-1981) was also in the group of artists as well as Lucie Tullat.
Roger was best known for his paintings of coastal scenes with emphasis on the sea and the effects of light reflections.

EXHIBITIONS
In France, he exhibited at the Galerie Katia Granoff (Quai Conti, in Paris, as well as in Honfleur) and at the Gallery Hautecoeur (rue de Rivoli, Paris).

In 1926, he began exhibiting at the Society of Independent Artists.
-
In 1932 he became a member and exhibitor at the National Society of Fine Arts.
and in 1956 at the Society of French Artists.
-
He also exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Independants, Salon d’Automne and National Exhibition of Fine Arts.
-
He exhibited at the Paris Salon for 35 years, receiving the Silver Medal in 1954.
-
Several of his paintings were acquired by the French State in 1925 and are included in the collections of the families of the Maharaja of Kaarpoutala, Comte de Tocqueville, Professor Marion, Andrei Gromyko and the USSR Embassy.

In the USA Roger de la Corbiere was represented by Arnot Gallery in New York, where his paintings remain on exhibition and command ever higher prices

Roger was buried in the family tomb Mascarel, the cemetery of Chatellerault.

His painting are in the collections of many well known persons throughout the world.

He worked mainly from his studio in Brittany, but also spent some time in the Riviera. His daughter carried on the family tradition, painting similar scenes.
