For your consideration we are delighted to offer a unique opportunity to acquire an early 17th century old master portrait of a Roman Catholic Bishop In The Republic Of Venice completed in 1630 when the gentleman reached 66 years of age -The portrait is inscribed AE TATIS 66 in the upper left corner and is dated below 1630 .
The Bishops family Coat Of Arms has been painted in the top right corner and bears a cross above the emblem.

An impressively large oil on canvas painting set within a later modern ebonized replacement frame.

Tiziano Vecelli or Vecellio, known in English as Titian, was a Venetian painter during the Renaissance, considered the most important member of the 16th-century Venetian school. He was born in Pieve di Cadore, near Belluno. During his lifetime he was often called da Cadore, 'from Cadore', taken from his native region.

Titian demonstrates his ability to convey the calm and at the same time authoritative character of the subject through his two paintings shown in our article.

CONDITION
In good order for it's considerable age of almost 400 years - great impact - no damage or holes or stretcher marks - relined many years ago - and with signs of careful retouching and restorations as expected in the previous centuries.

In our opinion the cross has been a later addition in earlier centuries and the inscription has been carefully enhanced due to wear in the gold paint used to write the lettering.

Overall a very decorative and imposing work indeed and as the work is Venetian School after Titian, makes for a reasonably good longterm investment.

Please excuse the areas of lighter background - they are simply varnish glare and not a faulty presence !

I feel that these early portraits are a great decorative addition to a period home - the problem is trying to find them in good condition

The example we offer is by an unknown artist who was clearly a follower of Titians works and note the clear resemblance in posture of the sitter and the positioning of his hands.
